Just to get you caught up in case you’ve been avoiding the internet over the last few weeks – last month Rihanna launched her highly-anticipated beauty range, Fenty Beauty, amid massive media buzz. The ethos behind the brand is that it is intended for everyone, regardless of skin colour or type. This vision was evident from the models chosen to headline the campaign, to the fact that the make-up range is heavily complexion-focused.
The focal point of the beauty line is the foundation range, which has been launched in 40 incredible shades. The foundation is complemented by Match Stix (used for concealing and contouring) in 30 shades and highlighters available in 6 shades. “I didn’t care how long it took, I was going to make sure that we covered most skin tones. Diversity and inclusivity are important to the brand. I hope that fans, makeup lovers, and makeup artists feel that”, Rihanna told Harper’s Bazaar at the launch party in Brooklyn.
Technically- speaking, Rihanna is not the first to launch a make-up range designed to cater to a wider range of skin colours, however her mega-stardom has served to shine a much-needed spotlight on the necessity for greater diversity within the beauty industry. The struggle for women across races, ethnicities and cultures to find a foundation that perfectly matches their skin colour, type and undertone can still be very real.
So whilst Fenty Beauty does ship internationally (for orders over $ 150, the foundation is priced at $ 35), it is really necessary for foundation shades to first be physically applied to ensure a perfect match for your skin (preferably along the jaw-line and in natural light for best results). This prompted us to ask which make-up brands offer the widest range of foundation shades and are physically available to us, in South Africa. And that will, hopefully, assist you in finding the best match for your skin!
