While big and bold statement jewellery has made a comeback this season, the feminine, classic appeal of fine jewellery will never go out of style. And warm, summery days that call for cami’s and off-the-shoulder tops and dresses provide the perfect platform to for us to accessorise to our heart’s content.
But if you’re going to layer jewellery effectively, there are definitely some tricks of the trade that are helpful in guiding the process. Because you want the final outcome to look considered and polished – not like you’ve just thrown together all the jewellery you could find.
To navigate this process, I’ve put together some guidelines that will ensure that you know how to layer jewellery like a fashion pro. PLUS, keep scrolling to see some of my favourite pieces from top South African jewellery designers.
1. KEEP THE METAL CONSISTENT
For your accessories to look “pulled-together”, select either silver or gold – whichever is more flattering for you – as your base colour. This will ensure that while each individual piece may be different, they will look like part of a set.
2. GO WITH THE ODD NUMBER RULE
When layering necklaces, keep the odd number rule in mind. This means that either 3 or 5 necklaces of varying length will create the balance you need to achieve the “effortless” layered effect.
3. VARY THE SHAPE AND TEXTURE OF THE PENDANTS
To create interest and different focal points, ensure that the pendants are different, yet complementary shapes. I love the combination of a simple chain, hoop and bar necklace.
